Sauna is an examination of a space and its cultural significance. For centuries sauna bathing has been ubiquitous in Finland. It has served both ceremonial and practical purposes: traditionally, women gave birth, brides bathed before their weddings and the dead were prepared for burial in the sauna. In contemporary culture the sauna is most often a leisure place, but the deep and lasting attachment to these highly sensual and sentimental spaces persists. In these images the Finnish winter landscape is contrasted with the darkness, intense heat and confined space of the sauna.
